MOBILITY SHOW 2006 Session A
"The development of electric propulsion: combination vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, storage batteries for new-generation electric vehicles, tramcars and trolleybuses"

By now, electric propulsion for urban mobility systems concerns virtually all of the local public transport and personal mobility systems, from the larger ones, such as underground trains and suburban railways, to mini-buses, city cars and motor bicycles, so that the wide range of mobility requirements is perfectly catered for.

One of today’s most advanced fields of research includes “combination” systems, which combine electric propulsion with the elasticity provided by thermal motors (often used as motor generators), which overcome the traditional limits of electric storage batteries.
The latter are also changing, providing new strategies for the management of the on-board energy chain and the launch of new, more performing, more suitable battery models. In the long term, the use of hydrogen as a fuel or energy carrier looks like a fascinating goal, despite the inherent limitation of its high production and handling costs.

The area of shared mobility, partly due to the heavy external costs of personal mobility and the congestion of urban networks, is going through a powerful expansion, which relies just on electric propulsion and fixed-plant systems, such as tramways – with their variants, such as the train-tramcar – and new-generation trolleybuses which have a fairly good operating range without a two-thread installation and power drive systems, so that this transport mode can be given a new lease of life.

The authors will present the most significant national and European experiences and will go into the details of their technological aspects, problems, benefits and potential prospects.
