The media and policy makers often quote a fully integrated transport system as the answer to all our transport problems.
Over the past ten years new technologies such as GPS, GPRS, SMS, Real Time Scheduling, Broadband, Database Management systems have become available to truly identify the needs of customers and to match those requests to identified solutions.
In rural areas it is important that we can maximise the use of existing resources to meet demands to keep costs down for users and authorities alike.
Several EU funded projects (SAMPO, SAMPLUS, VIRGIL, FAMS, DARTS, CONNECT, MASCARA) have evaluated the technologies and business models required to design Demand Responsive Transport Systems. This paper seeks to highlight the potential for transferring technologies and business models to assist communities and organisations throughout Europe and the world. |
