Overview
During the last years, on the basis of a wider and wider range of meaningful experiences mostly funded by European funds, flexible transport services have been identified as a solution to improve the quality and the competitiveness of public transport services with the aim to noticeably improve the quality of environment and the overall sustainability of the cities.
Flexible transport services play an intermediate role between traditional public services (with fixed lines and timetable) and taxi services as the best answer to face the mobility demand of target user groups (disabled, elderly, students, tourists, etc.) or rural/suburban area with low demand and dispersed mobility.
The workshop, jointly organized by MASCARA and SUNRISE projects, funded under the Interregional Cooperation Programme, INTERREG III C, and fostering the development, implementation and evaluation of new experiences in European countries, aims to analyse the role of flexible transport services and to highlight real experiences at Italian and European level.
The two projects, leaded by Cork City Council (MASCARA) and ATAF (SUNRISE) involve a total of 14 partners: Public Administrations, Public and Private Transport Companies, Research Institutes and Universities, experts and consultants from 10 countries: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece in the Mediterranean area; Belgium, UK, Ireland, Finland in the Northern area and new associates (Hungary, Slovakia) promoting the organisation of 6 training courses opened to experts and stakeholders on the sharing of experiences for the study and the implementation of new services, 7 pilot and demonstration sites, 4 feasibility studies to introduce new services, the organisation of dissemination events at national and international level.
